What Broke or Was Replaced on my Bicycle

  • Front Pannier Racks. Both sides had the frame shear just above the support bolts. Finished the trip with them held together by cable ties and splints made from my tripod.
  • Front Brake Pads. Too many steep downhills!
  • Foam Handlebar Grips. I had soft foam handlebar grips. By the end of the trip they were permanently deformed and needed replacement.
  • Front Fender Mount. Vibrations sheared off the "L" shaped bracket which held the fender to the front forks.
  • Toe Clips. One broken toe clip.
  • Water Bottle Cage. One of my water bottle cages sheared off due to vibrations.
  • Rear Pannier Racks. Metal frame sheared off twice and so was replaced.
  • Pannier Mounting Bracket. Aluminium bracket used to hold the pannier to the rack. Two of them failed.
  • Rear Hub Bearings. Probably due to poor bearings being used by the Motueka bike shop ... but I never worked out how I found 10 bearings on each side instead of the required 9.
  • Rear Hub. The internal bearings that run with the cassette were shot after Brazos Ridge and the mud bath.
  • Chain. Replaced in Helena to be safe as it was approaching the 1% maximum limit.
  • Tyre. Rear sidewall failed after 1500 miles (Salida).

What didn't break? The front hub, the frame, my wheels, and my gears.
